3 things you need to do if you're on call over the Christmas holidays

Christmas is here: decorations are up, Oxford Street lights are on and ‘Last Christmas’ is blaring in every shop. But the reality for social workers working over December is vastly different, because whilst most industries are slowing down for the year, social work doesn’t - and can’t - be paused.

Social workers have to support real people with real problems, and it is not rare for caseloads to increase over the festive period either.

In this article, the Imperium Solutions team shares 3 things you need to do if you’re working over the Christmas holidays.

1. Find a day to celebrate with your family/friends

If you’re spending your Christmas day bringing magic to children without a family, or giving a vulnerable adult some company - why not pick a separate day to celebrate with your family and friends? Boxing day, for example, is a great idea because most people will still be on holiday from work and we’re pretty sure they won’t mind having a second day of celebrations!

2. Support your colleagues

Supporting your colleagues is always a must, but showing that you are there to help over the Christmas period is particularly important and will go a long way. Winter can be a very lonely time for some, and when coupled with the pressures of being a social worker it can be easy to put your needs on the backburner. Show your support by checking in with your colleagues regularly, and make it clear that they can reach out at any time.

That said, social work over Christmas time can also be very rewarding; especially knowing that you’ve made someone’s special day that bit brighter. Spread that positivity with your colleagues and remind each other that the work you do is incredible. We recommend raising a glass after your shift or going for a celebratory hot choccy.

3. Look after yourself

After a long day, you need to pat yourself on the back and then mentally sign out of being a social worker for the rest of the evening. Get into some comfy pyjamas when you get home, snuggle up with your pets/family/housemates/hot water bottle and chill! Our favourite self-care practices also include:

  • Running a bath

  • Cooking a comfort meal

  • Guided meditation

  • Favourite TV show

  • Cheeky glass of red and a good book!

Social workers, you truly are modern superheroes and Imperium Solutions wishes you a very Merry Christmas - however you may be spending it!
