3 tips for moving to the UK as a social worker

The government recently issued a warning regarding a number of “very bad employers in the social care sector” exploiting overseas staff. This is occurring as an attempt to fill staffing gaps caused by low endemic pay.

While we hope to see the government tackle these staffing shortages in the near future, our consultants have decided to put together a list of top tips for moving to the UK so candidates can avoid dodgy deals!

1. Research your employer

Before signing any legal documents, it is important to confirm that your prospective employer is legitimate. Use the Companies House website to search the company’s name so you know it actually exists! We also advise overseas workers to check their employing organisation against the register of licensed sponsors which confirms that they are legally permitted to hire overseas workers.

2. Clarify job expectations

Discuss your job responsibilities, expectations, and the scope of your role with your employer. Make sure you understand your role's requirements to avoid being exploited by being asked to take on excessive or inappropriate tasks.

3. Use reliable recruitment agencies

As someone unfamiliar with the UK job market, working with a specialist recruitment company is a sensible idea as they will have a wealth of industry knowledge and trusted contacts. Their consultants will also be able to place you based on your experience, skills and personal preferences so you won’t be in for a nasty surprise on your first day!
