Councils in Nottingham, Dacorum in Hertfordshire and South Ayrshire took part in a pilot project trialling the use of geospatial technology to improve planning processes.
It focused on solving issues such as:
Recognising the affordances of 3D visualisations
Improved community engagement
Better management of developer contributions
Esri UK, a leader in the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) market, was the mastermind behind the projects and provided free consultancy and access to the software.
The mapping technology company were also awarded first place in a competition to find innovative ideas to improve planning back in Spring 2022.
What was the outcome?
Dacorum Council built a prototype tool to visualise infrastructer and developer contributions which were secured through planning obligations on a map as an alternative to static spreadsheet data.
Nottingham City Council discovered the benefits of using 3D visualisations in collaboration with other existing data to carry out constraints and impact assessments at the same time.
South Ayrshire Council’s project focused on the creation of an interactive community consultation platform to improve community and other stakeholder involvement in Local Development Plans.
Stephen Croney, head of planning at Esri UK, said: “The pilots have explored modern digital approaches to some common challenges faced by local planning authorities, all designed to help make the planning process more efficient and easier for everyone.”
