How to practise good digital hygiene as a social worker

In the world of social work, we often talk about maintaining a safe environment but what about staying safe online? Carry on reading for top tips on practising good digital hygiene as a social worker.

  • Back everything up

Imagine slaving over your case notes, only for them to accidentally be deleted and irretrievable. Nightmare, right? To avoid this situation, it is best practice to back up all important files using secure processes.

  • Stay organised

Get into the habit of naming all your files, so that if you need to retrieve them you don’t have to spend half the day clicking through every document on your computer! This is one of those things that only take 5 extra seconds and will save you considerable amounts of time in the long run.

  • Improve your security

Do yourself a favour and update your passwords! Oh and try not to use your Mum’s maiden name for every single site…

  • Be mindful of your digital footprint

What does your social media say about you? When representing any business, it is important to be mindful of your online reputation but as a social worker who is trusted to look after vulnerable people, it is paramount. It might be a good idea to keep your social media profiles private so that you can separate your personal life from your professional life. We know this is common sense, but try to avoid posting content such as drunk selfies from your Friday night or any comments that could be deemed inappropriate or offensive.

  • Is engaging with service users online appropriate?

Nine out of ten times, the answer to this is no. Make sure everything you’re doing is in-line with your employer’s policy - as well as weigh up the pros and cons.
