At Imperium Solutions, we want to help raise awareness of the resources available for young carers. Carry on reading to find out more about how you can go about getting support as a young carer.
Teachers
Talking to a teacher at your school is really important - especially if you feel you’re falling behind on homework due to your responsibilities as a carer. We know it can be hard to open up about difficulties at home, but your teachers are there to listen and will be able to help support you.
Childline
If you’re struggling with the pressures of being a young carer or need advice on something you can call Childline on 0800 11 11 for free. If you don’t feel comfortable talking on the phone, there is also a 1-2-1 counsellor chat which can be accessed here. All conversations are confidential and designed to help find you the support you need.
Social workers
A social worker from your local council can help support your household, upon request from you or a parent. They will carry out a young carers assessment in order to determine what kind of help will be most appropriate for your situation.
The person you care for can also have their needs assessed by the local council during this visit, if you both agree. For more information on what the assessment entails, visit the NHS website.
Financial support
If you’re a young carer over 16, you may be eligible for carers allowance. If you’re unsure about how to apply, it’s a good idea to discuss it with your local council who will be able to advise on the best options available.
