From a myriad of vacant FTE children's services, to increasing turnover in adults services, it’s no secret that the social care sector is need of some serious TLC.
Recently, health and social care leaders have shown ‘momentum for change’ to address the social care workforce crisis.
Sarah Blackmore, the executive director of strategy, policy and engagement at Social Work England commented that there was “a universal recognition of the fact that change is needed” among industry experts.
The regulator has also been “indudated” with applications from practitioners to take part in groups examining solutions to workforce challenges, such as recruitment and retention.
However, a report published earlier this month by The Nuffield Trust highlights that plans to reform social care have long suffered, especially since the pandemic.
Rooted in data from interviews with sector experts, and workshops with social care stakeholders, the Nutfield Trust report suggested that “one of the core weaknesses with the official response to Covid-19 was a fundamental lack of understanding about social care at the heart of Government”.
“There is a real risk that the momentum that has gathered around social care reform will yet again be lost,” it adds.
