When applying for a job in social care you will almost always require a DBS check so that the employer can decide whether you are fit for the role. However, there is more than just one type of DBS check and sometimes your employer is required to apply on your behalf. Carry on reading to find out more about whether you need a DBS check and what the difference between each is.
What is a DBS check?
There are four types of DBS check, including:
1. Basic DBS check
A basic Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) exists so that prospective employers can decide whether you are a suitable candidate for the role. The certificate shows details about your background, including any unspent criminal convictions or cautions. This is the lowest form of DBS which is only necessary for certain jobs such as those in the legal realm or social care sector.
Candidates requiring a basic DBS check can apply here.
2. Standard DBS check
A standard DBS is slightly more detailed than the Basic DBS check and includes both spent and unspent convictions, as well as reprimands and final warnings issued by the police. Your employer must apply on your behalf for this type of DBS check and cover the associated costs.
3. Enhanced DBS check
An enhanced DBS check is very similar to the standard check but also shares additional information on the applicant, such as local police records relevant to the role. This is common for those looking to embark on jobs in the healthcare or personal care sector, regardless of whether they’ll be working with children or adults.
Again, you are not responsible for applying for the enhanced DBS check and it will be requested and paid for by your company.
4. Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS)
This determines whether the individual has been banned from working with young people or vulnerable adults. It also offers information on the applicant’s criminal record history ao employers can decide if the role would be suitable.
Although your recruitment agency/potential employer will let you know what kind of DBS check is required to complete your application, you can also check this yourself using the DBS eligibility tool.
When applying for any of our social worker roles you will be required to fill out a candidate screening form, which requires you to have completed a DBS check.
