Why becoming a carers assessment officer is a rewarding career

Carers assessment officers play an important role in helping provide carers with the support they need to lead rich and fulfilling lives. Carry on reading to find out if this could be the rewarding career you’ve been searching for.

What happens during a carers assessment?

In most cases, the carers assessment will be carried out over the phone or in person. It is optional to have the person who is under care present, but some carers may find it useful to have their input/support.

During the meeting, the carer is asked questions about their caring role and how it impacts them and their ability to carry out daily tasks. There should also be a discussion around mental health and feelings towards being a carer.

If the assessment officer decides the carer meets the eligibility criteria set out by the government, they will then receive a support plan detailing next steps.

What are the benefits of becoming a carers assessment officer?

Make a lasting impact

One of the most rewarding aspects of being a carers assessment officer is knowing you’ve helped make a difference to the carer’s life by providing them with resources they may not have otherwise had access to. The main objective for any carers assessment should be to provide solutions which help make a carer's day-to-day more manageable. Knowing your input brought this into fruition can be very satisfying and a great motivator to get out of bed and go to work in the morning!

Each day is different

Not one for a 9-5 office job? As a social carer assessment officer you’ll be travelling frequently and constantly meeting new people. This variation can be really beneficial to those who enjoy having flexibility and freedom rather than a rigid routine.

Mentally engaging

Applying your expertise and problem solving skills is a big part of being a social carer assessment officer. Working in collaboration with the carer to reach the most positive outcome can be very satisfying and reinforces why you do what you do.
