Why is long Covid a problem for social care?

The Office for National Statistics has estimated that the social care sector has been hit the worst by long Covid.

Compared to other occupational groups, social care staff have seen the highest number of on-going symptoms, with almost 5.5% of the workforce experiencing exhaustion and low concentration levels up to 12 weeks after a positive test.

This was highest out of the recorded figures for healthcare (4.58%), the civil service or local government (4.46%) and teaching and education (4.12%).

With the number of social care vacancies having risen by over half (52%) since 2021, this does not come as welcome news for the sector.

In fact, data from ONS has previously suggested that those who suffer with long Covid symptoms are less likely to return to work altogether - in particular, those aged 50 and over.

This is a worrying prospect for the future of social care, which currently has a workforce with the average age of 45 (as of March 2022).
