If you’ve seen the new science fiction horror film M4GAN then the prospect of a robot-conducted interview might send shivers down your spine, but don’t worry, we promise it’s not that bad!
Carry on reading for top tips on what to expect and how to prepare, because at the rate that technology is growing, your next interview could very well be with a bot.
Remove any distractions
Make sure you remove anything which could obstruct the background of your interview, such as an unmade bed or that wacky painting you were gifted! A plain white or neutral coloured wall is ideal as it means you - and the AI technology - won’t be distracted! Having some natural light on you is also a good idea but if it’s not possible to sit opposite a window then a lamp works too. Just make sure the light isn’t shining directly onto your face as this might cause glare and I think we can all agree that it is better that you can actually see the screen during the interview!
Focus on body language
Just because you’re interviewing with a ‘non-human’ doesn’t mean you too should act as a robot! Be conscious of your body language, i.e. sit up straight, smile and look into the camera when answering the questions. Some AI technology is advanced enough to draw conclusions about who you are from the way you present yourself through paralinguistic behaviour, so make sure you radiate confidence!
Communicate clearly
Speak steadily and slowly so that the automated interviewee has a clear grasp of what you’re communicating. This doesn’t mean you have to talk at a snail's pace, but be conscious of the fact that it’s not a two way conversation where your interviewee can ask you to repeat yourself.
The software may also be programmed to listen out for keywords, so do your research and go over the job description again and look for skills/industry jargon that could help bolster your chances of success.
Practice makes perfect
Do a trial run before the big day so you can rest assured that your camera, sound and lighting are all in check. It might also be worth recording yourself so you can identify areas for improvement and iron them out.
Breathe!
Like any other interview, it is important to relax, take your time and enjoy the process! Get an early night and pick out something professional to wear early doors so that you’re not rifling through your wardrobe 5 minutes before.
The worst thing you can do in an AI-led interview is not answer the question - even if you’re uncertain avoid saying nothing at all. For example, if you are asked about how you would approach a situation you’ve never been in before it is better to improvise than stay silent.
